Terms of service

Draft for review, not yet in effect. Highlighted items need the owner's details before publishing.

These terms are an agreement between you and Caribou LLC, which operates Book-Line. By using Book-Line you agree to them.

Using Book-Line

Book-Line is currently available by invitation. You are responsible for your account and for what happens under it. Archive owners decide who is invited and what each person can do.

Your material is yours

You keep every right you have in what you add. You give us permission to store it, process it to make transcriptions, translations, summaries and other features, and show it to the people the archive's owner has invited — only as needed to run Book-Line for you. That permission ends when the material is deleted, except for copies in backups for the period our privacy policy states.

Only add material you have the right to add. Family papers often include other people's letters and photographs; please be thoughtful about living people's privacy, and remove anything a family member asks you to.

What not to do

Transcriptions and translations

Transcriptions, translations, summaries, family-tree links and answers are produced by software and can be wrong — especially with old handwriting, faded scans and family nicknames. Check anything that matters against the original. Corrections you make are kept and are never overwritten by later processing.

Plans and payment

Joining someone else's archive is free. Creating your own archive may require a paid plan once plans are offered. Plans renew automatically until cancelled, and you can cancel at any time; cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing period. Prices and what each plan includes are shown before you buy. Payments are handled by Stripe.

Ending

You can delete your account at any time. We may suspend or close accounts that break these terms. Before closing an account for any reason other than abuse, we will give the archive's owner reasonable notice and a chance to download the archive.

Disclaimers and liability

Book-Line is provided "as is." We work to keep archives safe and available, but we can't promise the service will be uninterrupted or error-free. Keep your own originals. To the extent the law allows, our total liability to you is limited to the amount you paid us in the twelve months before the claim. [Have counsel review this section.]

If we change these terms in a way that matters, we will tell account holders by email before the change takes effect.
